A software based utility that measure a disk IOPS and present a pointvalue like the DskSpeed.

Scenario A:
You have a virtual machine with a virtual disk attached running VMware vSphere 4.1 hypervisor. The virtual disk is located on the physical servers local storage (ex. four RAIDed 15000K SAS drives).
Be able to measure the disks IOPS

You replace the four RAIDed 15000K SAS drives with four RAIDed SSD High Performance drives. Be abe to measure the disks IOPS

Here be able to compare SAS drives to SSD drives.

Scenaro B based on Scenario A:
You replace the local storage with a SAN-based storage.
Be able to measure the disks IOPS.

Scenario C based on scenario A and B:
You replace the VMware hypervisor with Citrix XenServer 5.6 FP1.
Be able to compare the virtual disk IOPS between VMware virtual disk and Xen virtual disk.

Shortly:
A software based utility should be more effective than using Performance Monitor in Windows Server adding relevant counters and monitor.
