I'm trying Unstoppable Copier to backup an entire HDD to a spare drive before reformatting.
The drive being copied has a single partition and contains an XP Home installation plus all the usual files, music and photos collected during four or five years use.
Unstoppable is installed on A Vista 64bit machine.
The problem I've found is that although Unstoppable reported that all the XP disc files had been copied and the operation was complete, not all the files were actually transferred. For example, there are four user accounts in the Documents and Settings directory. These contain lots of files and folders but these were not copied.
I am wondering if this is something to do with file permissions?
Many thanks

The thing to do is "take ownership" of the documents and settings before doing a transfer in this case. To do this, right click on the directory, choose the security tab, click advanced, go to the Owner tab, click Edit and select your user. Make sure you tick the "replace owners on subcontainers and objects". This will stop any access issues copying the data. However, it might be a problem if you go back to using the disk under XP as these folders will be owner by someone else.
Hope that helps you! |
