I know that restore points are in hidden directories.

If I have a new hard disk, with a new partition, and use the program to copy all the files from the old hard disk, will it also copy the hidden directories with the restore point information in them?

I ask this becuase the old HD has sector errors and one is on a registry file. So the idea is to introduce a new HD, make partition, use
Unstoppable to copy data to new HD. Then use old recover version of registry files to boot OS then restore registry from newer version held in the restore point data.

This will only work if the restore point directories and data are copied too.

I know, the user should have used a utility like ERUNT but they didn't.

If not, do you know of a disk or partition image utility that will not be stopped by bad sectors or bad reads on the source drive?

I believe the restore points will be copied (im about 80% sure) but ive never actaully checked myself... im sure i remember seeing this files being copied in the recovery log on several occasions so im fairly confident they do. But if someone has a definate answer please post it here!

At the risk of invoking threadomancy, the short answer to this question is no, it will not.

Unstoppable copier, at least for me, skips files/folders that it does not have permission to read the contents of. The "System Volume Information" folder which contains the restore points, by default, is only readable/writable by the "SYSTEM" group, meaning not even an administrator would be able to access it without modifying permissions. This means that even when ran from an administrator account (or with administrator privileges under Vista/7) that this particular folder will be skipped, normally.

Solutions:
1. Add Administrors (or "Everyone") as readable to the permissions of the "System Volume Information" folder, or...
2. Run Unstoppable copier from an environment that completely ignores folder permissions (notably, WindowsPE based live CDs)

As a side note, if the hard drive was formatted with FAT32, there would be no file permissions and it would, in fact, work. My previous comment holds true for NTFS-formatted drives.
